The slide-on tailpiece cover is exceptionally ornate, having an art nouveau design (scrolls and frames) plus the words “Lyon & Healy, Chicago” in a cameo shape etched near its center. The other notable, most striking visual appointment of the instrument is the violin-style headstock scroll which adds a distinctive and elegant, even regal, touch to this high-level model. This illustrious model comes with a carved spruce top that has two asymmetrical points, the higher being on the bass side it has a black headplate cover held in place by four recessed screws. It is also drop-dead gorgeous, as only this gracious, Victorian-era designed instrument can be.

This version is called the “Style A Professional” and it was, indeed, professional in every way possible. Now we can pick up those radio signals from the Mars Rover. This is the version having the asymmetrical points and, unlike many we have seen lately, it retains its complete (mysterious) extension device - including the polished black cap - on the treble side. T here are few mandolins made in the 20th century that are as ingenious or aristocratic as the prewar Lyon & Healy/Washburn Style “A Professional” mandolin.
